Tentative agreement reached between sheriff and Winnebago County Board

WINNEBAGO (WREX) — A tentative agreement has been reached between Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana and the county over a lawsuit filed by the sheriff earlier this year.

The lawsuit alleged the budget the county board passed for 2019 was illegal.

Terry Ekl, Caruana’s court-appointed lawyer, told 13 News he still considers the agreement in negotiations until the board officially accepts the agreement.

We caught up with Sheriff Caruana today, and he told us he’s happy with the deal that was reached.

“It’s an agreement that has not been voted on,” Sheriff Caruana said. “It’ll be voted on two weeks from yesterday night by the board. It looks like a good, fair agreement for both sides. I have to say, I’m pretty happy with it.”

The actual financial terms of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.
