Rockford participates in nationwide immigration protests and vigils

ROCKFORD (WREX)- Hundreds of people filled the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd for a vigil Friday night, joining hundreds of other protests and vigils across the country.

Event organizers say they aim to educate people about immigrants are going through at the southern border.

Local leaders, like Mayor Tom McNamara spoke at the event. Mayor McNamara says that Rockford Police will never help ICE serve raids while he is mayor.

Organizers say they want the event to teach people about the current treatment of immigrants along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“We want people to understand the terrible things that are happening, and to grieve for that,” said Faye Marcus of the American Association of University Women. “What is happening to people on the border is unacceptable.”

The event ended with a candle light vigil for migrants coming into the U.S.
