ROCKFORD( WREX) –The Great Neighborhoods Project is asking for the city’s help in funding for a program director.

“We think neighborhoods are the greatest untapped resource to making our great community,” said Great Neighborhoods co-leader Patrick O’Keefe

Right now, the organization is volunteer based and organizers say it’s time someone takes charge of changing the community

“Well I think every neighborhood has their hidden assets, the things that they love about their neighborhood and we just need to help them raise and tell they stories about what is great in their neighborhood,” said O’Keefe

The new program director could help with places like Denny’s Dariette, a family owned business in one of Rockford’s south west side neighborhoods.

“There is nothing wrong with this neighborhood. Do we need some improvements? Yea we may need some improvements you know streets need to be done sidewalks need to be done, and hopefully there will be someone out there to do it for us,” said Benny’s Dariette Owner Benny Salamone

The project is asking for a total of $60,000 over the course of three years.

It’s an investment both residents and volunteers say is worth every penny

“You make it better for the kids first of all, the elderly, and the ones that are growing up in it. If you can do that, you can have a wonderful community, with wonderful people and wonderful things to do,” said Salamone

The city of Rockford will have final vote for the approval of the agreement on Monday.
