ROCKFORD (WREX) — There are thousands of Facebook groups where you can buy, sell and donate items. There’s also a growing community of people on Facebook who buy, sell and donate breast milk.
According to a CNBC report, the people who participate in the milk donation groups are mothers who aren’t able to produce breast milk and mothers who produce enough to donate.
However, doctors say trading breast milk can be extremely dangerous because there’s no way to regulate whether the donating mother has a virus like HIV or Hepatitis that could be contracted by the baby.
There’s also no way to regulate the quality of the milk.
“The problem with that is we don’t know how they stored the milk, if proper handling instructions were done,” said Tianna Armstrong, RN at SwedishAmerican. “We don’t know their background history medical-wise. So we don’t know ‘are they exposed to anything that’s being shared through that milk.”
The Centers for Disease Control recommends families buy milk from donation-based human milk banks.
