ROCKFORD (WREX) — Rockford Police and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department are spending the week at Rockford University.

The departments kicked off their 2019 Winn-Rock Youth Police Camp with a safety day.

From SWAT to bomb squad, teens had a chance to interact and learn about all areas of equipment.

Rockford Police says the event is a great way to educate the community about their jobs.

“People a lot of times they have questions about what we do, you know? They don’t understand some of the things and the equipment we have and why we have it,” Rockford Police Lt. Robert Reffett said. “You know, this is a good time to start with the kids, so they can relay it to their parents and other kids.”

The students had the opportunity to get a close look at Mercyhealth’s REACT helicopter.
