ROCKFORD (WREX) — The home of the most famous women’s baseball team is holding a celebration honoring the late Penny Marshall, who featured the Rockford Peaches in her 1992 film.
The International Women’s Baseball Center is hosting the Penny Marshall Celebration on September 13 – 15 in part to raise money for the future $7 million museum centered around women’s baseball.
IWBC also announced an additional $105,000 secured funding for the museum during Tuesday’s unveiling of the Penny Marshall Celebration. The center secured $50,000 in funding from state grants and $55,000 from private donations.
The Penny Marshall Celebration kicks off one month before, on Aug. 14, with a special viewing of A League of Their Own at Prairie Street Brewing Co., 200 Prairie St., Rockford.
The screening is $5. A vendor market to buy Rockford Peaches-themed items opens at 6 p.m. Doors to the movie open at 7 p.m. and the movie begins at 8:30 p.m.

“Play Ball for Penny” VIP Reception
Friday, Sept. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Indoor City Market, 116 N. Madison St., BowTruss Room
Tracy Reiner, who played Betty Staghetti in A League of Their Own will be the guest of honor to honor her mother, Penny Marshall. At the 1940s Rockford Peached-themed private party, guests will enjoy food, drinks and special entertainment to help raise money for the International Women’s Baseball Center museum. Tickets are $100 per person.
Penny Marshall Market
Friday, Sept. 13 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Indoor City Market Lower Level
City Market vendors will be on hand selling Rockford Peaches baseball and nostalgia items. Original All-American Girls Professional Baseball League players and bat girls will be on hand signing autographs. The event is free and open to the public.
Penny Marshall Celebration and Unveiling
Saturday, Sept. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. at the IWBC property across from Beyer Stadium
Penny Marhsall’s daughter and granddaughters will unveil IWBC’s first outdoor museum design which will also be a tribute to Penny Marshall. The event is free and open to the public.
Play Ball MLB Comes to Rockford
Sunday, Sept. 15 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Beyer Stadium
Major League Baseball, USA Baseball, USA Softball and IWBC will host a free event with kids’ baseball games. Boys and girls ages 4 to 13 can play baseball and take home a free shirt, wristband, bat and ball. CLICK HERE to register your child to play baseball.
Starfires Home Run Derby
Sunday, Sept. 15 at noon at Beyer Stadium
Proceeds for this event benefit the Rockford Starfires, Rockford’s women’s baseball team.
