Chicago Cubs scout visits Rockford to support all-girls baseball team

ROCKFORD (WREX) – A girls baseball team is getting support from a member of the big leagues.

Last summer, Chicago Cubs Scout Nick Belmonte was the Head Coach in the International Women’s Baseball Center Training Camp. Two of the members of that camp were inspired by Belmonte’s coaching and created an all-girls team in Rockford called the Lil’ Peaches.

“It just warms my heart that this is starting to explode in the city of the Rockford Peaches,” said Belmonte. “It can’t be more romantic than to have little league team of girls in a league with boys, in of all places, Rockford, Illinois.”

On Monday, Belmonte came to Rockford to witness what coaches call tremendous progress.

“These girls from the first practice are ten thousand times improved and we’re only halfway through the season,” said Lil’ Peaches Co-Head Coach Bethany Morlan.

The Lil’ Peaches continued their progress by scoring the first runs in team history on Monday.
