ROCKFORD (WREX) — The Winnebago County Health Department is looking to lower the HIV count in 2019.

Thursday is National HIV Screening Day and in observance, the health department is offering free HIV screenings for extended hours.

The day is meant to encourage people to learn their HIV status so they can either treat or prevent the disease. Department officials are hoping that the services help them reach their goal of having no new cases of HIV in 2019.

“And so those that are negative, we want to keep them negative,” says Todd Kisner, Director of the Winnebago County Center of Health Protection. “and those that are positive, we want to get them into care and get them healthy.”

The health department will be open Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. for walk-in HIV testing.
