ROCKFORD (WREX) — Rockford Police plan to hand out more citations for people riding ATVs within the city limits.

The initiative comes following an incident on Monday night where two teenagers riding ATVs damaged the grass at Rockford Police District 2.

Police want to remind people it’s illegal to ride ATVs and mini bikes within city limits.

While people like Officer Matthew Williams hoped that education would be enough to solve the problem, recent events have shown police that enforcement is the only option.

“So it’s becoming more and more of a problem for sure that we’re trying to stop,” Officer Williams said. “I think the only way to stop it is by enforcement and education, which we’ve tried the education part. Now it’s not working, so now it comes down to the enforcement part.”

Rockford Police say they will not only hand out citations, but also impound vehicles that violate the law.
