ROCKFORD (WREX) — A Rockford man is arrested in connection to a murder Tuesday morning on Adams Street in Rockford.

Rockford Police said Quinton Smith, 23, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member.

Smith is accused of shooting and killing a 20-year-old man just before 6 a.m. on the 100 block of Adams Street. Authorities have not released the name of the victim.

Police say they believe Smith and the victim knew each other and an argument led up to the shooting. The victim ran away from Smith and tried to get into a car near State Street when more shots were fired, according to police.

A woman driving the car was also shot. Her injuries are non life-threatening.

A portion of State Street was blocked off to take the victim to SwedishAmerican Hospital and for police to investigate the area.

Police said they found Smith at a home on the 700 block of Royal Avenue and taken to the Winnebago County Jail on $2 million bond. The murder is under investigation.
