TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Representatives of the eight states and two Canadian provinces in the Great Lakes region will meet next month to discuss helping fund a federal plan to prevent Asian carp from reaching Lake Michigan. Officials say the July 16-17 session in Chicago will focus on a $778 million strategy developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to strengthen defenses at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Joliet, Illinois. The states will be asked to help pay for the project.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Firefighters from across Wisconsin will be staffing Madison fire stations and ambulances Sunday so the city’s firefighters can attend a memorial service for Todd Mahoney, the firefighter who died after competing in the Ironman triathlon last weekend. The 38-year-old Mahoney was found unresponsive in Lake Monona Sunday during the swimming portion of the 70.3-mile triathlon.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee treasurer’s office records show Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes is delinquent on property taxes. The city’s deputy treasurer says Barnes, a Democrat, has failed to pay about $2,225 in property taxes, interest and penalties for his condominium. Barnes told the Journal Sentinel he is paying on an installment plan, but the deputy treasurer said he hasn’t made payments.

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) — Police in West Allis are investigating a fatal shooting. Officers responded to reports of gunshots just after 1 a.m. Friday. Officers found a male victim who had been shot. Police say the victim is dead. Officers continue to investigate. No other details were released.
