BELVIDERE (WREX) — The Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere is celebrating the birth of a new animal.
The zoo announced the birth of a ring-tailed lemur. The zoo says ring-tailed lemurs weigh roughly 5-6 ounces at birth and will spend the first few weeks of their life clinging to mom as she jumps around and climbs.
“Ring-Tailed Lemurs are on the endangered species list and continue to have a decreasing wild population,” says Rick Anderson, director at the Summerfield Zoo. “All species of lemur are endangered as they are only found on the island of Madagascar where their greatest threats are deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and hunting.”
The new lemur baby, along with the lemur troop, is now available for the public to view in the zoo’s lemur habitat.
Summerfield Zoo is open Wednesday through Sunday.
