PECATONICA (WREX) — After 22 Illinois State Police Troopers have been hit on the side of the road, including two of them being killed, state police are continuing to crack down on Scott’s Law violations.
State police have issued 750% more Scott’s Law violations compared to this time last year so far. That equates to nearly 4,000 citations across the state, according to state police.
District 16 Police, which primarily handles Winnebago County, says they’ve handed out 120 written Scott’s Law citations.
Authorities say there are still drivers who claim they don’t know what the law is and they want that to change.
“We want to get that message out certainly. If we can do it without people getting citations, we’d prefer that as well,” says Carl Heintz, the Captain for Illinois State Police District 16. “We always love voluntary compliance. If we have to issue citations, we’ll do that as well.”
