Salvation Army hosts donut eating contest

CHERRY VALLEY (WREX) – A few people got their fill on National Donut Day thanks to the Salvation Army.

They hosted their first annual donut eating contest at their Cherryvale Mall location.

Contests had 5 minutes to eat as many donuts as they could.

Organizers say the event raised money for a good cause as well as educated people on the origin of Donut Day, which starts from the Salvation Army providing soldiers with donuts during both World Wars.

“We felt doing something like this would bring awareness to our community, of a little bit of Salvation Army history but also meet today’s need,” said Salvation Army Winnebago County Coordinator Mark Martsolf.

The contest raised over $350 for the Salvation Army’s Friday Night Patrol which provides food and hygiene products for the homeless in our community.
