Stateline spellers do not advance in Scripps Spelling Bee

UPDATE: No local spellers made it to the finals of the Scripps National Spelling be.

Hannah Visel, from Lena, incorrectly spelled Tallahassee.

Avani Joshi, from Roscoe, incorrectly spelled dubitative.

Rebekah Zeigler of Polo spelled Penchant correctly, but did not advance according to Scripps. She ends her prolific spelling career because she will soon age out of the competition.

Finals for the Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held Thursday.

 

ORIGINAL: ROCKFORD (WREX) — If you plan to watch the Scripps National Spelling Bee this week, you’ll notice some competitors from the Stateline.

Three spellers are competing in the spelling bee in Fort Washington, Maryland and they all spelled their words correctly during a Tuesday round.

  • Hannah Visel, from Lena, spelled the word ‘tiffin’ correctly on Tuesday.
  • Avani Joshi, from Roscoe, spelled the word ‘lberian’ correctly.
  • Rebekah Zeigler, from Polo, spelled the word ‘willet’ correctly. Zeigler is competing in her 5th spelling bee and it will be her last as she ages out of the competition.

The 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee continues until Thursday.
