ROCKFORD – When Rock Valley softball looked at the scoreboard when the final out was made at nationals this weekend, it read 6-1, 7th inning. RVC’s theme this year was “Six Plus One” – going for their sixth straight championship and in memory of the late Summer Amman, for whom a Mental Health Awareness Day was held earlier this season.
The Lady Golden Eagles finished off a three wins in one day run to the title on Saturday in Rochester, Minnesota, mindful of the final outcome both on and off the scoreboard.
“There was a butterfly flying around shortstop,” recalled freshman Paige Webster.
“Gave me goosebumps when I saw it and it gives me goosebumps now,” said sophomore Courtney Fernette. “I know big Sum was with us.”
“I knew she was there,” said sophomore Breanna Crown. “Seeing the six plus one really showed we were playing for her.”
“The hashtag was six plus one, there’s no doubt in my mind when we looked up in the seventh inning, it’s a 6-1 ballgame in the 7th, she was looking down on us and we knew this game was ours,” said head coach Darin Monroe.
