ROCKFORD (WREX) – Good Sunday morning. It looks we will continue to have a few showers lingering into parts of the morning. Some of these showers could contain thunderstorms so expect a bit of lightning and heavy rainfall at times. These showers should be wrapping up by the earlier afternoon, but we cannot completely rule them out until the later evening.
This drier weather will last for the rest of Sunday though. As high pressure fills in, it will provide us slightly cooler and drier air. Temperatures today will only reach into the lower to mid 70’s for highs. We also get rid of some of the mugginess and see showers and storms stay to our south. Overnight, will continue to be quiet and partly cloudy. We will drop down into the mid 50’s, but we must enjoy the hours of dry weather while we can because the rain comes back Monday morning.
Memorial Day could see showers return during the morning into the late afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has us under a slight category when it comes to severe weather. This means that we could have the potential for large hail, high winds, lots of lightning, flooding, heavy rainfall, and isolated tornado risk. We will keep further eyes on Monday for this purpose. Tuesday night may also provide another shot at severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Flash flooding may be a threat Tuesday night as well.
Furthermore, the National Weather Service has a Flood Warning along the Pentatonic River near Shirland and the Rock River at Latham Park until Thursday at 1 AM. This is because forecast models show the river will be rising into minor flood stage during the weekend. As more rain showers move in, other areas along the Rock River are forecast to rise as well. Gladly, most will only stay in the action stage.
Those hoping for dry weather may get some good news late next week. After Tuesday night’s storms, the weather may stay dry from Wednesday night to Friday, giving us much-need relief from the rain.
