Pecatonica (WREX) — A lot has changed in Pecatoncia from 1869 to 2019.
But one thing that has stayed the same, is the tight-knit nature the community is known for.
“You know who is who. And people jump in and volunteer and it’s just because, ‘yes this is Pec, we want to do it, we want to do this,'” Pecatonica Sesquicentennial Chairwoman Jennifer Johnson said.
This Memorial Day weekend, the neighbors from the village are celebrating its 150th birthday.
Pecatonica native Bob Squires said that the celebration is not just about remembering the history of the village, but also seeing how far the community has come.
“We are not just a fair. You know when you start to say you are from Pecatonica, people will ‘say oh I go to the fair’ out there or to the Pec thing’. They should come out and see all the businesses we have and things are always growing,” Squires said.
Village President Bob Smull hopes to help the Pec community continue to grow in the future.
“It is an honor to represent the tax payers of Pecatonica. And like I said, it is a huge honor to be in charge at this time when we are doing our 150 year celebration,” Smull said.
One hundred fifty years of Pec pride with the hope of many more to come.
“This community is very strong in keeping the community going and community events and backing each other,” Johnson said.
Pecatonica has special events scheduled every month for the sesquicentennial. The next one is a Mini Tractor Pull happening on June 15 at 10 a.m.
