Rockford PD: Man drives away from officers, crashes into other vehicle

ROCKFORD (WREX) — A Rockford Police chase ends in a two-vehicle crash near Rural Street and Paris Avenue on Saturday.

The incident began with officers conducting a welfare check on someone in a vehicle near 12th St. and 12th Ave. around 11:45 a.m.

During the welfare check, police say the driver identified as 32-year-old Timothy Bennett drove his car toward officers, nearly hitting them. Officers then followed Bennett in his car to the intersection of Charles Street and Washington Street, where police say he hit a sign.

Police say Bennett then headed north on Paris Avenue, ran a stop sign and hit another vehicle with two people inside. No one was hurt.

Police say Bennett tried to runaway, but was arrested nearby the crash. After the arrest, police also found a gun in the vehicle. Bennett faces more than ten charges including unlawful use of a weapons by a felon, reckless driving, aggravated assault to a peace officer.

He’s being held in the Winnebago County Jail.
