WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) — Winnebago County Chairman Frank Haney says he would like the voters to decide if they want to see a countywide elected chairman.

He says he would like to see this is issue on the ballot in the November 2020 election. Whatever voters decide will take effect in 2024.

This comes after the board made several changes to his position mid-term. Most recently, he says the board voted to take away some of his day-to-day duties and give them to the county administrator. It also now has the county administrator report directly to the county board, not the chairman.

Under the referendum Haney is proposing, the board will still have the ability to change the chairman position from 2020 to 2024. That’s why he says he would like to see the board define what how it wants to see that position during that time period.

“I think the board needs to be very upfront about its intentions now or in the very near future because there are perhaps some people who are considering running for chairman,” Haney says. “It’s not a partisan discussion. Whoever would be running for this position, we want to be upfront about the position is so they know what they’re running for and if they would want to do that or not.”

Board members say they will likely take up this issue next week.
