OREGON (WREX) – A man from the Stateline has accomplished something not many others have done – climb to the top of Mount Everest.
Chad Gaston, who is from Oregon, reached the summit along with his team on Wednesday night. Gaston was one of eight people on the team to make it to the top. According to a blog that Gaston had been sending updates to, his team had lost three men due to altitude sickness and injury.
“Last night when we found out he summitted, it was just so much emotion coming out for all of us screaming and his first text back was, ‘alive,” said Gaston’s mother Beth George. “That’s all it said, that he had made it.”
George says he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro several years ago, which led to him climbing other mountains.
“He lives at sea level in 95 degree weather in Costa Rica,” said George. “So then to go from that to 50 below and ultimately 29,000 feet is just insanely crazy.”
According to the blog, the team is back at camp 4, the highest camp on Mount Everest.
