SPRINGFIELD (WREX) — A bill to strengthen Scott’s Law in Illinois passes through both houses Thursday and now awaits Gov. JB Pritzker’s approval.

The bill outlines seven steps that would increase the minimum fines for Scott’s Law violations. It would also increase the criminal penalty, making a Scott’s Law violation punishable by up to one year in jail.

The bill is dedicated, in part, to District 16 Trooper Brooke Jones-Story, who was killed in on March 28 in Stephenson County after a semi driver struck her while she was performing an inspection along the shoulder of US 20.

The driver in that crash was cited with a Scott’s Law violation and faces numerous other charges in the trooper’s death.
