ROCKFORD (WREX) – Several students from the Stateline are heading down south this weekend to compete in an event that was once called, “the Super Bowl of the mind.”
The National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) 2019 High School National Championship Tournament is taking place this weekend in Atlanta. Auburn, Belvidere, Hononegah and Winnebago high schools will be among more than 300 teams from around the country competing in quiz bowl. The event tests students’ knowledge on many topics such as sports, pop culture, classic literature, and biology.
“It’s a very competitive sport where you can know roughly the same amount and some time, it’s just up to the questions,” said Hayden Vagle, who is a student at Hononegah High School. “But you just try to know more than everyone else.”
“It’s kind of humbling actually because I think we get to go to the highest level compared to some of the other teams, ” said Justin Abel of Auburn High School. “We go to a national level, which is something that not a lot of people can say. And it’s a great experience to be able to represent our school and our city at such a high level of competition.”
The tournament takes place from Friday to Sunday.
