STERLING (WREX) – A soldier from Sterling, Illinois, killed in action and missing for decades, is now home.
Corporal John G. Krebs was 19 when he and his twin brother fought in the Korean War. On July 11th, 1950, the two brothers were part of a group fighting off a group of North Korean tanks. John went missing, and George went to rescue him, when they were both killed.
George’s body was recovered and is buried in Sterling, but John’s body was missing ever since. That is until his remains were identified late last year.
After almost 70 years, John Krebs is now back home in Sterling.
He has received multiple medals posthumously, including the Purple Heart.
