ROCKFORD (WREX) — It’s the first day downtown Rockford is getting a makeover with the CRE8IVE: transformational ART Mural Festival.

The festival kicked off Wednesday at the corner of South Church and West State streets.

Artists will be working with teams to create 9 large-scale murals, according to the Rockford Area Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.

“Five years ago, we were inspired at a CVB event by the city of Cincinnati to embrace the potential of large-scale murals and what they can do for our neighborhoods and for our community,” RACVB President & CEO John Groh said. “And I think we’ve been dreaming about it since then.”

Each day also includes a block party at one of the mural locations.

Food trucks, live music and a live mural painting were at Wednesday’s kick-off event.

“I’m really grateful for all the organizers, for my family, to be given this opportunity to be at this huge change and to bring art to this city,” Groh said.

The festival continues until Sunday.
