DIXON (WREX) — One year after a former Dixon High School student allegedly shot at a resource officer and teach inside the school, leaders are stepping up security protocols.

“We have an increased police presence from now through graduation,” Michael Grady, the principal at Dixon High School says.

Grady says the school also installed 120 new security cameras throughout the building, updated its visitor system to gather more information about who is coming and going and gives students fewer doors to enter and exit the building.

“We’ve limited access to two (doors),” Grady says. “One from the student parking lot and one from just in front of the building here. And, as soon as the bell rings we have one entrance.”

While the anniversary looms over Dixon high, Grady says counselors are open to talking to students and staff if they are having a hard time dealing with the situation. But Grady says his focus for students, teachers and staff is to try to move on.

“These kids deserve the same graduation as everybody else and that’s what they’re going to get,” Grady says. “That’s what we’re going to give them.”
