ROCKFORD (WREX) – A group of men who helped save their friend’s life at Carlson Ice Arena are recognized by the Rockford Park District.
“It definitely feels good to see all your hard work pay off and to see Chris out and about with no defects. It makes you feel really good,” said Scott Kline, one of the people who helped save Chris Zelek’s life.
The park district presented gold medals of valor to the people who helped save Zelek’s life. Back in March Zelek’s heart stopped while he was playing in an adult hockey league game. He has a heart condition called v-tac, causing the chambers of the heart to beat quickly. After Zelek’s heart stopped, Scott Kline, Curtis Jones and Andy Hill were among those who helped revive him using an AED.
“It’s nice to have everybody at one place at one time to be able to say thank you to everyone at one shot. And again, the biggest thing that I’m after at this point is the AED machines because that is what saved my life,” said Zelek.
Zelek got a permanent defibrillator surgically implanted after the medical episode.
