ROCKFORD (WREX)- A rockford man could spend the rest of his life in prison after he is found guilty of first degree murder in a Winnebago County Courtroom.

Terrell D. Ellis was found guilty Monday after a jury trial.

On April 28, 2016, police were called to the 3500 block of Louisiana road for a medical assist. When they got there they found Monica Box badly beaten. She was taken to the hospital where she later died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Ellis and Box were dating when he beat her to death.

First degree murder carries the sentence of 20 to 60 years in prison. But, Ellis could face life in prison because the jury says the murder was so brutal and malicious and proven without a reasonable doubt.

Ellis will be back in court on May 31.
