GLEN ELLYN – The Rock Valley College softball team stared down elimination and the end of their championship streak and didn’t blink, beating Joliet 5-0 at the College of DuPage to clinch the Region IV tournament title.
RVC beat Joliet 4-3 in the Region IV semifinals before dropping a 6-5 decision to the Lady Wolves to force the final game of the tournament in Glen Ellyn. It was originally set for a Saturday start, but after one inning and a few second inning at-bats, the game was suspended and pushed to a noon resumption on Sunday.
The Lady Golden Eagles’ bats were quiet, failing to record a hit in the first three innings. Delaney Devor’s triple and Camryn Bedell’s RBI single got the hitting and scoring started in the fourth.
Then RVC broke it open in the top of the fifth. After Paige Webster’s infield single loaded the bases, Trinity Fry scorched a bases-clearing triple to bring all three runs home. Emily Perkins wrapped the frame with another run-scoring hit to hand starter Breanna Crown a five-run lead.
Crown went the distance, throwing a complete game shutout to secure the Region IV championship for the five-time defending national champions. Breanna Crown, Paige Webster, Mackenzie Lawrence, Cadyn Ehrenberg and Kirstin Fudge were named to the all-tournament team.
RVC will now host the District championship best-of-three later this week.
