Cold temperatures and rainy conditions didn’t slow down a packed schedule of Class 1-A regional championship games for the IHSA girls soccer playoffs.
At Genoa-Kingston, Oregon overcame a 2-0 deficit, forcing overtime with a pair of second half goals, and then getting the game-winner from senior Kately Byerely in the extra session to defeat Byron, 3-2. It’s the Lady Hawks’ first regional title in the program’s third year of existence.
“They believed in themselves and believed in each other,” said head coach Seger Larson. “They wanted to win this for a program that’s been around for three years now.”
“Oh my God, it means the world to all of us,” said Byerely, fighting back tears. “I have such a great team, we all have our backs…it’s such an extraordinary experience, we’ve all worked so hard for this.”
Oregon will face Rockford Lutheran in Wednesday’s 1-A sectional semifinals at Indian Creek in Shabbona, with a 4:30pm start time.
As for other Saturday regional championship action, Stillman Valley blanked Hinckley-Big Rock 4-0 at home to win their 1-A crown. The Lady Cardinals will face Harvard in Tuesday’s sectional semifinals after the Lady Hornets defeated Winnebago, 1-0. That game was also on Saturday, hosted by the Lady Indians, who couldn’t break through against a tough Lady Hornets defensive effort.
