ROCKFORD (WREX) – It was an exciting day at St. Rita’s Catholic School, when a school-wide assembly took place to award Jeremy Toledo with the Teacher of the Week award.
Toledo teaches music at St. Rita’s and other schools in the area, and he is adored by students from kindergarten to 8th grade.
Toledo remains humble, and said the subject is why students get so excited about coming to his class, but students said the teacher is what really makes class so fun.
“He just makes class fun yet still learning, he still prevents chaos while keeping us involved,” student McKenzie Kline said.
Toledo said his job is amazing because he gets to do two of his favorite things.
“I just play music and hang out with cool kids all day. What a way to spend your day,” he said.
Toledo said music allows him to connect with students differently than most teachers, because he gets to see what type of music they’re listening to, as well as introduce them to new tunes.
He said he wants music class to be a release of their day, not an added stress to the school day. For some students, it’s a place to grow and excel.
“What’s great when you find kids that maybe struggle in school generally, but they find a home in music class. Something they can really feel confident in and excel in,” Toledo said.
Student Noah Hakanson said Toledo is great at his job for various reasons.
“First of all he’s passionate about his job, and second, he knows a lot about the subject,” Hakanson said.
And some students think Toledo deserves even more than Teacher of the Week.
“I think he’s deserving of teacher of the year,” Kline said.
