MACHESNEY PARK (WREX) – Athletes from all over the region competed for top honors today in Machesney Park.
Harlem High School hosted the 2019 Region A Special Olympics spring games on Saturday.
More than 600 athletes hit the track to compete in 18 different track and field events.
Each athlete hopes to qualify for the Illinois state summer games in June.
While the competition is tough, the most important part of the games is having fun, for both the athletes and the volunteers.
“It’s not only important for the athletes who are able to show off their abilities, but it’s important for our volunteers,” Special Olympics regional director Debbie Kelly said. “They think they’re giving their time, and they walk away with so much more. And then it’s an opportunity for their children and their siblings succeed.”
Fifteen soccer teams also competed at Saturday’s spring games.
