ROCKFORD – Auburn tennis player Quinten Nevenhoven is our WREX Athlete of the Week.
Nevenhoven grew up around the game of tennis, with his mom and aunts taking their careers to the collegiate level. Nevenhoven says he never remembers a time when he wasn’t a tennis player.
“I kind of grew up on the court,” he said.
He had plenty of time to practice at the Forest City Tennis Center as a kid. Then he started playing competitively, breaking through as a teenager.
The Auburn program and area tennis as a whole has improved in recent years.
“Just playing with better people pushes you to be better,” Nevenhoven said. “You want to be like them.”
Now Nevenhoven is the one younger tennis players in the area want to be like. He makes sure to show them that tennis is about more than just wins and losses.
“It’s also about who you are in the sport,” Nevenhoven said. “Tennis is known as the gentleman’s sport. It is appropriate to be gentlemanly and control yourself.”
He hopes to control himself and take control of all of his matches as the season gets into its final stages, with one last run at state looming in a couple of weeks.
