Kids learn cooking through Rockford Police Department class

ROCKFORD (WREX) – Kids in our area are getting the chance to learn to cook with the help of the Rockford Police Department.

Tuesday was the graduation for the Flavors With Five-0 cooking class at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Rockford. This is the department’s first cooking academy as the class has been meeting for the past seven weeks. The meals that the kids learn to make are considered house-friendly, so they can find the ingredients at home.

“We figured it would be a great way for the kids to learn some life skills while also helping to boost their creativity and self-esteem,” said Resident Ofc. Patrice Turner of the Rockford Police Department.

As part of graduation, students had to complete a challenge where they got a bag of ingredients, come up with a dish, name the dish and serve it to judges to be graded.

“I think it’s needed and I love that we’re able to bridge the gap and make that gap between police and the community a little bit smaller,” said Det. Courtney Tillmon of the Rockford Police Department. “That’s our main goal is to make them more comfortable with the police and to have positive interactions with us.”

The department says it plans on continuing the class next school year.
