MACHESNEY PARK – Andrew Navickis got back into the ring a couple of years ago and says he dropped 65-70 pounds in an 8-month period. The 35-year-old Machesney Park native took silver in the Pan-American Games and will get a chance to represent his country overseas in China.

“I’m trying to pave the way and get these other guys out there,” Navickis said. “I’ve been doing it for about 12 years.”

The veteran fighter knows his time in the ring is limited, but he sees a lot of potential in the Rockford area.

“I don’t have a lot of years left in me, about three or four, but in the next three or four, there will be a lot of people from the area getting noticed,” Navickis said.

Navickis says his four daughters and wife keep him focused. Even if he’s not as strong and quick as he was in his younger years, he says his mental toughness is even greater now. He looks forward to the challenge of fighting among the best in the world.
