RMTD buys 5 new hybrid buses with federal money

ROCKFORD (WREX)- New diesel hybrid buses are coming to Rockford.

The Rockford Mass Transit District approved buying five 35-foot buses from California.

The buses have a smaller diesel engine and a large battery pack. RMTD says the buses are 25% more fuel efficient and reduce emissions by 90%.

The purchase is federally funded, each bus costs $719,167, totalling $3,595,835.

No local tax dollars were used to purchase the buses.

They are expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2020.
