MACHESNEY PARK (WREX) – A Machesney Park fifth grader is helping raise money and awareness about organ and tissue donation.

Averey Anderson is making and selling woven friendship bracelets. So far, she has raised more than $500. A portion of the money was donated to Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, a not-for-profit organ procurement organization. Anderson also got educational material from Gift of Hope to talk about the myths related to organ and tissue donation.

“By making and selling these bracelets, I am teaching others around the world about organ donation,” said Anderson.

Anderson’s uncle, Brent Hubley, died after a motorcycle accident when she was two years old. However, her uncle became an organ and tissue donor. Now Anderson continues to raise money in honor of her late uncle.

“I’m so proud of my daughter for doing this,” said Staci Hubley Taylor, who is Anderson’s mother. “I’m so proud of my brother. He is a hero to so many people. It’s just remarkable how many lives you can affect.”

Anderson also helped organize a memorial walk in 2018 at Willowbrook Cemetery in Roscoe on what would have been her uncle’s 30th birthday.
