The Stateline is no stranger to tumbling success – J&J Tumbling and the Gymnastics Academy of Rockford have become hallmark training facilities for local tumblers to fine-tune their skills. Three of them put their talents on display in a state-wide tournament held in the region this weekend.

Belvidere North hosted the USA Gymnastics Illinois State Championships, with GAR’s Daniela Zavala and Ellie Kirane and J&J’s Sarah Thompson taking the floor in their own neighborhood.

“It’s excellent, we usually have to travel two to three hours for state champioinships,” says J&J coach Megan Gearhart. “To have it here in the backyard where the athletes’ families can come and see them and see what they’ve done with all the hours in the gym is a really nice experience.

“It’s so nice to have familiar faces and we’re all there cheering for each other like we’re teammates even though we’re competing against each other. It just feels like a family,” said Kirane.
