Freeport community thanks police with gift baskets

FREEPORT (WREX) — The people of Freeport rallied together to show law enforcement how much they care about them and to say thank you for their hard work.

Kelly Chesney and Tammy Byrnes posted on Facebook two weeks ago, calling for the community to pitch in on donations for Freeport Police and the Stephenson County Sheriff’s office.

The result of the post was baskets being filled with gifts from local business, letters from students and more than $1,500 in gift cards.

“We give back to the community the best we know how, but this is certainly very touching,” said Todd Barkalow, the Chief of Freeport Police.

Kelly and Tammy wanted to ‘Back the Blue’ by showing how much the community cares about their police force.

“I think it’s a good way for people to show that we in Freeport love our police department and we embrace and appreciate them,” said Kelly Chesney.

Freeport is now challenging the rest of the stateline in ‘Backing the Blue’ by showing their appreciation for law enforcement. You can use #BackTheBlue on social media.
