Anniversary of Rockford Clock Tower demolition Tuesday

ROCKFORD (WREX) – April 16 marks one year since the iconic Rockford Clock Tower demolished.

One year later it’s still unclear what will go in its place. A group of investors purchased the property in 2017 and demolished the building on April 16, 2018.

In the past investors have mulled over ideas like a casino, a new hotel, entertainment, or possibly space for retail and restaurants.

The tower was built back in 1973. For decades, it was a beloved part of Rockford. But in 2016, a deadly shooting at the resort ultimately lead to a condemnation of the property by the city.

Once it was eventually sold, investors said there was no way to rehab the property and they had to demolish it.
