ROCKFORD (WREX)- April is alcohol awareness month and Rosecrance is spreading awareness about alcohol use disorder.
The health organization says half of its nearly 20,000 substance abuse clients were seeking treatment for alcohol use last year.
The organization also says more than 15 million adults in the U.S. experience alcohol use disorder.
“The whole purpose of Alcohol Awareness Month is to decrease the stigma so people aren’t afraid to talk about it as much,” said Dr. Tom Wright, Chief Medical Officer at Rosecrance. “One of the ways someone can [help] this month is go to an alcohol awareness activity at your church, or school, maybe with someone who is having trouble.”
Rosecrance says signs of a potential problem include daily drinking, withdrawal symptoms and shakiness when not using alcohol.
