ROCKFORD (WREX) – Two big weekends of soccer are bringing thousands of people and dollars to the Stateline.
This past weekend was the first Saturday and Sunday of the Puma Cup Champions Series. Around 700 teams were expected to visit the area to compete, with thousands of family, friends and spectators, too. Tourism experts expect the two tournament weekends to bring in around $1.8 million into the region and around 27,000 visitors.
“It’s nice to see the game grow quite a bit, the complex has a lot of do with it, the town has a lot to do with it, and then we get to see it all with our kids in town so that’s the fun part for us,” Puma Champions Cup Tournament Director Frank Mateus said.
The first weekend of soccer games features six Division 1 college games at the Mercyhealth Sportscore Two.
