FREEPORT – Freeport softball pitcher Taylor Murray is our newest 13 WREX Athlete of the Week.
The Lady Pretzels senior has been dominant to start her final spring season. As a pitcher, she owns a 3-1 record with 22.1 innings pitched, throwing 35 strikeouts, allowing 5 earned runs, tossing three complete games and a no-hitter. At the plate, she’s hitting .692 with a double and two home runs, to go with 11 runs batted in.
The future Illinois Lady Illini is a Freeport legacy, as her mom pitched for the Lady Pretzel. But Taylor has carved out her own legacy.
“As far as a pitcher and a hitter, not in my time,” says fifth year head coach Chad Hersey. “Strong hitter, then pitches like that on the mound, then is one of the fastest and best base runners in the area. She’s got all of it. She has every tool.”
Murray handles the game’s mental demands when she’s all alone in the pitcher’s circle, too.
“Sing a song, then pitch,” Murray says. “Pressure’s on, I get nervous, but I stay loose and do my thing.”
Murray hopes to lead Freeport to the top of the NIC-10 conference this season.
