Man accused of abduction in Winnebago County is now in custody

CERRO GORDO, Ill. (WREX) — The man wanted for an alleged abduction in Winnebago County is in custody after crashing his vehicle during a multi-county chase Thursday morning.

WAND TV in Champaign is reporting that Matthew Harkey, 43, was taken into custody early Thursday. The crash happened on Illinois-32, between Cerro Gordo and Cisco, when Harkey lost control of the vehicle north of County Road 1045 North. Harkey’s vehicle hit a guardrail and rolled the vehicle several times.

He was ejected from the Nissan Rogue and taken to the hospital, but is expected to be OK.

Roscoe Police issued a warrant out for Harkey on Wednesday after a woman called police and said she escaped from Harkey. The woman says she was abducted by Harkey. She had injuries to her head, according to police.

The warrant was issued charging Harkey with home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint and residential burglary. His bond was set at $1 million.

Roscoe Police say Matthew Harkey is accused of abducting a woman, who later escaped and went to police. The woman had injuries to her head, according to police.

A warrant was issued for Harkey on charges of home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint and residential burglary.

Harkey is considered possibly armed and should be approached with extreme caution.

The bond on the warrant is set at $1 million.

Harkey could be driving a silver Nissan Rogue with an Illinois registration FP65916 or a red Mitsubishi Lancer Illinois registration BA36134.
