ROCKFORD (WREX) — Police are bars are already getting ready for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday weekend.
“Usually, we’re pretty packed and its a really good time downtown in general,” Dustin Dibenedetto, the General Manager at the District Bar and Grill says.
But even though some people might chose indulge in some green beer, the District says it wants to make sure you make it home at the end of the night.
“We’re all human beings,” Dibenedetto says. “We don’t want anything to happen bad to anybody. You know, when you see somebody intoxicated, you want to take care of them”
One way they say they do that is through promoting local ride sharing services or with Uber and Lyft.
“We’ll offer free beverages, soda to the Lyft drivers who just want to pick somebody up,” Dibenedetto says. “If they want to come in grab a soda, grab a water, coffee, tea whatever they may need.”
But if your Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations take you just 13 miles down the road to Belvidere, police there say they’re keeping a close eye on drunk drivers.
“We do understand the tragedies that could happen when people do drive under the influence and cause accidents,” Belvidere Police Chief Shane Woody says.
Chief Woody says they’re able to do this through a grant from the state. That money allows the department to pay two to four more officers to patrols on the roads starting thursday through sunday.
“For those that are out and enjoying themselves, please drink and drive responsibly and make sure that everybody gets home safe,” Woody says.
