The NIU men’s and women’s basketball teams handled their business in the first round of their respective MAC Tournaments, advancing to Cleveland for the next step in their postseason journeys.
The NIU women went down to the wire against Western Michigan – down 69-68, the Lady Huskies drew up the perfect play for Mikayla Voigt, who got behind the defense for a go-ahead layup. WMU’s last second attempts were off the mark, but NIU was whistled for a foul with .6 seconds remaining after a length video review. The Lady Broncos were granted two free throws, but missed both to preserve the NIU victory.
The Lady Huskies advance to the MAC Tournament quarterfinals at Quicken Loans Arena, facing Ohio on Wednesday.
As for the NIU men’s team, they ran past Ohio, 80-61, behind 23 points from Eugene German. Dante Thorpe added 18 points while Lacey James chipped in with 14 points. The Huskies advance to the MAC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, facing Toledo.
