Tournaments bring hundreds of families to downtown Rockford

ROCKFORD (WREX) – Athletes and families from across the Midwest are in Rockford this weekend for two big tournaments.

The UW Health Sports Factory welcomed more than 100 teams for the AAU Rockin’ Rockford Grand Prix volleyball tournament.

Tournament organizers say teams are competing from Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana all for a chance to get to the national tournament in Orlando. It’s the second year the tournament has chosen to Rockford to host.

“The space is great, they have a beautiful facility down here, wood courts, you couldn’t ask for a better spot
right here on the river,” tournament director Justin Basovsky said.

The competition continues on Sunday.

The Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates the tournament will bring in around $162,000 into the region.

Across the river at the BMO Harris Bank Center, wrestlers are also competing this weekend.

Approximately 900 wrestlers of all ages are participating in this years Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation championships. Weigh-ins were on Thursday. Saturday wraps up competition for the young athletes. That tournament is estimated to have an economic impact of around $513,000.
