ROCKTON – Hononegah senior guard Hannah Malcomson is our WREX Athlete of the Week. Malcomson plays a key role in the backcourt for the state-bound Lady Indians, hitting clutch shots when the defense collapses on the NIC-10’s all-time leading scorer, Jordan King.
“It means a lot that I can come out and do my part and get what I need to done in order for us to keep that scoring and keep going up,” Malcomson said.
Malcomson transferred into the program from Rockford Lutheran two years ago. She’s gotten more and more accustomed to playing for head coach Randy Weibel.
“She’s been huge the last month and a half,” Weibel said. “She’s shot the ball well.”
King agrees that Malcomson has emerged as a big threat during the Lady Indians’ current 14-game winning streak.
“For her to hit those open shots is huge for us,” King said. “Obviously, there have been some turning points in games for us.”
Malcomson scored the first five points of the game against Wheaton Warrenville South in the Super-Sectional round Monday, no easy feat against a slow-paced Lady Tigers team. She hopes to help get her team off to another fast start in the program’s first ever trip to state this weekend.
Hononegah takes on undefeated Maine West in the state semifinals at approximately 7:15 Friday night at Redbird Arena.
