UPDATE: Suspect arrested after standoff at Dollar Tree

ROCKFORD (WREX) – UPDATE: Rockford Police say the suspect involved in the standoff with police at the Dollar Tree on East State Street has been taken into custody.

The entire incident lasted around 4 hours from Sunday evening into early Monday morning.

Police say officers first responded to the Dollar Tree around 9 p.m. for a possible robbery. That’s when officers saw a man matching the description of the robbery suspect inside the store, possibly armed with a handgun.

For the next few hours, police tried to make contact with the person inside. Around 12:45 a.m., the department tweeted that the suspect was finally arrested with no injuries.


Rockford Police are maintaining a perimeter around the Dollar Tree on East State Street tonight after a man allegedly tried to rob the store.

Everyone who was inside the store at the time of the robbery was able to get out safely. Police say when they got to the scene that they saw the suspect inside. Police added that the suspect appeared to have a gun.

The suspect has not answered any attempts by police to speak with him. However, Rockford Police believe they have the suspect contained in the store.

Rockford Police are asking all residents to avoid the area while the situation continues to play out. A reporter on scene for 13 News says officials are not letting anyone into the parking lot of the Dollar Tree due to the belief that the suspect is armed.
