ROCKFORD (WREX) — A suspect involved in a standoff with police has been identified as 36-year-old Stanley Turner of Rockford.
He’s charged with armed robbery, unlawful use of weapons by a felon, aggravated battery to a senior citizen, and two counts of unlawful restraint.
Rockford Police say Turner was involved in the standoff with police at the Dollar Tree on East State Street. The incident lasted about 4 hours from Sunday evening in to early Monday morning.
Police say officers first responded to the Dollar Tree around 9 p.m. for a possible robbery. That’s when officers saw a man matching the description of the robbery suspect inside the store, possibly armed with a handgun. Police say Turner entered the store, grabbed two female employees, one of whom was over the age of 60, and pushed them to the back of the store. The employees were able to exit the store and were not hurt.
Police say after several hours trying to contact Turner inside the store, a Rockford Police K9 went inside and located him hiding in a loft.
Around 12:45 a.m., the department tweeted that the suspect was finally arrested with no injuries. Officers recovered a handgun from the scene along with stolen cash from the business.
Turner is in custody at the Winnebago County Jail.
